Each year in late March or early April, the great and the good of the watch and jewellery industry gather in the small town of Basel (about 40 minutes from Zurich by train) to showcase their latest creations. Held at the Messe Basel convention halls, the Baselworld show is the biggest such event on the planet, with 2007 attendance topping 101,000 visitors. The tagline of the fair is most appropriate - “The World Watch and Jewellery Show”. At last year’s fair, silicium and silicon were the buzzwords, every major brand had something in silicium. In contrast, 2006/07 seems to have been a year of rest for the hardworking elves of the watch industry. Aside from a few exceptions, the fair as a whole was not spectacular. There was enough to keep the buyers excited, but there were few outstanding watches or breakthrough innovations. This report covers 10 brands and aims to give those who did not attend the fair a general feel of what happened.
